Our Research

This page tells you about the Scottish Police Authority’s research for the future.

The Scottish Police Authority and Police Scotland recognise the value, benefits and impact of research and evidence. We are committed to developing the evidence-base to inform policing policy and practice in Scotland, co-ordinating a strategic approach by bringing together a range of key stakeholders.

The Authority and Police Scotland promotes the contribution that policing data can make to strategic improvement, and the delivery of the Vision for Justice in Scotland. We work with key stakeholders on research projects which help to shape future policy on Scottish policing.

The Authority and Police Scotland have set four strategic outcomes that focus and drive our research activity, which takes place through the Forum:

  • Future research commissions benefit from enhanced governance, improved coordination and specialist advice regarding methodologies and data availability.
  • Commissioned research is reviewed, and its impact understood. Effective, evidence-based policing in Scotland is being championed and communicated to a wider audience.
  • Knowledge-exchange activities (seminars, webinars, roundtables, conferences) are used to enhance engagement with an agreed programme of work. The Forum’s reach across networks is expanding.
  • External research funding opportunities are identified, influenced and put to use, and they are aligned to the agreed strategic research priorities of the Forum.

Our most recent research and the Terms of Reference and recent Forum agendas and minutes can be accessed in 'Related Content' below.
