The Authority’s Forensic Services Committee, chaired by Paul Edie, oversees and monitors delivery of all forensic service provision. The committee refreshed the terms of reference for committee and implemented a specific focus on drug driving performance in May 2022 to ensure enhanced scrutiny and support for improvement around forensic toxicology.
As well as enhanced committee focus, the Authority also stood up a Forensic Toxicology Oversight Group to provide enhanced oversight and scrutiny of key areas of identified service risk – including drug driving. The oversight group met for the first time in August 2022 and reported through the Forensic Services Committee and to Authority.
To ensure an independent assessment of the challenges faced and improvements required, the Authority asked His Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary in Scotland (HMICS) to carry out an independent review of the forensic toxicology service on behalf of Authority members.
Quarterly reports are presented to Forensic Services Committee to update on drug driving performance and the change programme.
