Conclusions and Key Findings
Just under half of respondents to the survey were aware of at least one initiative put in place by local policing. To raise awareness of initiatives in future, respondents’ suggestions included improved communication through pre-existing organisations or groups (like schools), or in local press bulletins.
Without taking into account awareness of initiatives, there was a decrease in overall confidence, trust and local police performance between the Feb-Mar 2023 and Oct-Nov 2023 surveys. This mirrors national trends, with a notable decrease in levels of confidence and trust documented in the Authority’s national polling between July 2022 and July 2023.
Regarding sense of community, decreases were observed with those saying ‘strongly agree/agree’ falling by 6 percentage points between Feb-Mar 2023 and Oct-Nov 2023. Comments largely centred around positive community spirit, anti-social behaviour, and impact of resources on service delivery and police visibility.
Comments about anti-social behaviour, police’s physical visibility/engagement, and wider public sector partners were also made when respondents were asked on comments on topics raised within the survey.
