About

Policing is an essential public service, playing a fundamental role in Scottish society, protecting human rights, maintaining community safety and wellbeing, operating independently from government and respecting diversity in all its forms.  It operates in  a pressured, visable and highly scrutinised environment.

Strong support, effective governance, scrutiny, and accountability all play a key role in ensuring policing in Scotland is effective and meeting the needs of the communities and citizens it serves. This is the core purpose of the Scottish Police Authority, one of the most significant of all Scotland’s public bodies.

The move to a single national Police Service in 2013 began an important reform journey, but we are continuing to see the transformation of the service in order to fully respond to the future needs of our country and its communities.

In May 2023, Police Scotland and the Authority acknowledged the existence of institutional racism and discrimination within policing.  Recognising that the processes, attitudes and behaviours of an organisation are discriminatory – however unconsciously that may be – is the crucial next step for effective organisational development.  This marks a significant milestone for policing, one that moves the focus from continually describing a problem to consider what and how we address it.

As a member of the Authority, you will be at the heart of this endeavour. You will play an important part in ensuring that the Authority and Police Scotland demonstrate a strong, practical commitment to strengthening the culture within policing and building a truly anti-racist and anti-discriminatory service.

Remuneration is £309 per day for a time commitment of up to 6 days per month. A maximum of 72 days will be incurred. Reasonable expenses incurred will be reimbursed.  Appointments are non-pensionable.
